WINNER OF THE MEDITERRANEAN WOMEN’S AWARD 2024

Nermin El-Bahtiti’s candidacy has been honored with the Mediterranean Women’s Award 2024 for her determination to help former women prisoners and her fight for legislative changes to eliminate social stigma, overcoming her own personal experience.

Nermin El-Bahtiti

Egypt

Nermin El-Bahtiti was a victim of domestic violence, and her firsthand experience of imprisonment during the Egyptian Revolution inspired her to help other former prisoners by founding an institution focused on their rehabilitation and reintegration. She identified the problem faced by released women, who lack a system to facilitate their social integration, which prompted her to develop a mechanism for community reintegration: she thus created the LIFE Foundation for Development and Community Integration.

Furthermore, in 2017, she created Beet Elhayah as a safe haven for released women without family support or a home. Before establishing the shelter, her own home served as a refuge for these women.

Her initiative has a clear social impact, supporting released prisoners, helping them reintegrate into society through psychological and social rehabilitation programs, and legal and economic assistance, while reducing recidivism and improving community safety.

Nermin El-Bahtiti transcended her personal experience and transformed it into a specialized program that has successfully rehabilitated approximately 5,000 women to date.
